WATER GIRLS

Water Girls

Official Selection of the 2017 New York Short Film Festival

Set in the heart of New York City, between 6th to 8th Ave, from 42nd to 55th St, this narrative film unfolds the story of Yuri, a Japanese college girl working as a hostess girl - “the modern Geisha”. As the plot delves into Yuri’s life experiences, the narrative peels back the layers to reveal the intricate rules, complex relationships, cultural nuances, and underlying struggles within the clandestine world of the underground entertainment industry.

“Water Girls” indicates these young women navigating life without a clear direction, opting to flow with the current like water. With an increasing number of young Japanese women dedicating their youth to hostess jobs, this film strives to shine a light on the industry’s impact on their identities. Through the experiences of two hostess girls, the narrative aims to raise awareness about the struggles young women face as they navigate and, at time, lose themselves in the dynamic realm of hostess clubs.

Directed and Screenplay by Yun Ye.
